Random Acts of Kindle Kindness Grows Dreams

During the month of August, I created Random Acts of KindleKindness.  The act entailed sending Kindle copies of Don’t Die with Your Song Unsung to friends, coworkers, clients, etc.

To seed the Acts, I gave the executive director of the Fredrick Douglas Family Foundation $10 and told him to send copies to 10 people he thought would benefit from receiving the gift.  A few weeks later, I started receiving messages from the people he had gifted books. One lucky recipient was an administrator of a high school for inner city girls.  The administrator and I exchanged a number of emails.  We brainstormed possible ways to work together to bring Gary Russo and the message of the book to her girls, and possibility their parents.
I followed up with some ideas and received this message back:

“I must share with you this story. I am reading my student's journal and she writes:
JOURNAL REFLECTION QUESTION:

"When I look in the mirror, am I happy with what I see?"
RESPONSE:

"Sometimes when I look in the mirror, I am not happy with what I see. I see a girl who has been hiding the passion for singing for years, and it kills her inside..."
Talk about synchronicity!  I sent her your book...  will let you know.   :)”

The Work of the Ego

Being given a copy of Desideratra and learning that the author, Max Ehrmann (1872-1945) was generally unknown for this beautiful piece of work during his lifetime, has allowed me to consider the concept of the ego – and specifically, my ego.

During the last week, I was approached by a woman named Nancy.  Nancy had been present at a GaryRusso performance and purchased two copies of Don’t Die with Your Song Unsung.
Nancy told me one copy was for her and her husband and the other copy was for her son who was facing some professional life challenges.  She sent the book to her son and received a version of this message:  This is just what I needed.  I needed to remember how I see a situation is how the situation will appear.  If I think everyone I work is a jerk, they are jerks.  If I think I won’t be promoted because others are getting unfair advantages, I will make myself angry and probably not do as good a job – thereby not get promoted!

Nancy’s son went on to say that reading Don’t Die helped him to remember he has the ability to manage his thoughts and he has the ability to create his present.  He asked his Mom to keep sending more positive books and materials.
I will admit it feels wonderful when someone shares how my work has positively impacted their life.  Yet, I know my real growth will come when I can feel good about the work I have contributed even if I never know the impact it has or will have on others.  Let’s just say I – and my ego -- have some work to do!

Stumbling on Happiness

Oh, it’s that old awareness and perspective thing coming back to haunt us all again.
So you want to have kids, yah? Parents beware for what you wish! Harvard researcher, Dr. Daniel Gilbert’s research shows that ‘people with young children living with them are the least happy of all.’ How is that for a Monday morning wakeup call?

Gilbert’s research goes on to show, however – and this is a big however – that it is critical that parents believe children will make them happy. That belief, no matter how unsubstantiated by evidence, allows parents to continually put forth the effort, energy, time and money needed to rear a child to adulthood.

Now here is the perspective changing part directly from the author: “As a result of that sacrifice, we love them all the more. We don’t value our children in spite of how difficult they are, we value our children because of how difficult they are.”

My Mom always said you appreciate the things you work hard to accomplish. Once again, Mom was right and she did not need any research to prove her intuition.

Thank you, Mom!

Discomfort and Personal Development

Dr. Success Challenge thanks to TUT morning message:  Think of an area of your life you feel discomfort.  Things like your lack of follow up and follow through; your vocabulary before a speech; your finances; the condition of your home -- either literally, figuratively or both.  Now imagine that area of comfort at 110% of who you would really like it to be.  Imagine every detail of the discomfort area transforming into a strength.

The challenge is not in naming the discomfort.  You are probably well aware of the discomfort you allow yourself to feel about the area.  The real challenge is creating the 110% image and replacing your discomfort awareness with a perspective of comfort and strength.

Peace be with you,

Seeds, Gardening, and Transformation

I received an email today from my first teacher in the behavioral sciences, Pamela Cole. At the end there was this quote,

“Let us be grateful for the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” Marcel Proust

Seeds, gardening, planting and transformation have been a part of my daily conversation for several months now. Last week my daughter Dana planted seeds in her grandparents’ garden. Both Dana and my parents discussed the process. This last weekend in the Stillpoint ISDS class I was talking about snakes (which have a transformative meaning in Jungian dream work) and I said of my lack of gardening skill, “I don’t touch dirt.”

Yet planting the seeds of growth is what personal development and self-help means to me. Moment by moment we are all planting seeds in our life garden. The impact of what we plant is not the results we get. The impact of our life garden is how well we remember to count the flowers and not the weeds.

Happy gardening and may peace be with you,

Transforming to Happiness

The work of transformation is not about the world getting more peaceful.

The work of transformation is about YOU becoming more peaceful regardless of what happens in the world.

Then there is the peace of knowing we are all human.  This is what that sounds like:

Andrea: You have to describe that story without using shame, blame or rationalization in order to have more peace in your life.
Client: You can’t take those away from me. I won’t be able to explain anything in my life!

Bryon Katie: Gratitude is who we are without our stories.

Goals, Energy and Self Help Books

I once bought a book entitled Living Without Goals just because the title ticked me off so much. The thought of living without goals is so counter intuitive and so alien to me I actually bought the book just to prove the author was wrong. I bought that book 20 years ago.

Today I write living without goals still does not resonate with me, yet I now understand what the author was attempting to convey. Having goals, writing goals, thinking about our goals is not the problem. How we attach to our goals is!

Dr. Success™ Challenge*: Think about your goals. Is it the goal that turns you on and ignites your flame for life or is it the potential outcome?

Consider your goals from a place of “high attention, low attachment”.  And remember:  where you put your energy, you create your results.

I wish to thank Jack Canfield for introducing me to the concept of “high attention, low attachment.”

Anyway

It is my intent to fill in a lot of the story behind the scenes of Don't Die.  Here is today's installment.

Truth be told I enjoyed my prep day enormously. The book I was reading ended with a passage entitled Do It Anyway. I knew that passage, and I knew it well. It had come into my life in the late 1990’s. My spiritual advisor, Vicki, had introduced one line from the poem to me as a comfort. During the many years of work with Vicki, I agonized to understand a destructive business relationship my husband was involved in. Vicki attributed the piece to Mother Teresa, as did the book galley I read that day. I found out a few years later the passage was often attributed to Mother Teresa. The real author is leadership visionary, Kent Keith. Keith wrote the piece when he was a 19 years old sophomore at Harvard as part of a booklet created to teach leadership skills to high school students. The correct title is The Paradoxical Commandments of Leadership.

The Paradoxical Commandments of Leadership
By Kent Keith[1]
People are illogical,
unreasonable, and self centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good,
People will accuse you of
selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win
false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today
will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness
Make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest of men and women
with the biggest ideas can be
shot down by the smallest
men and women with
the smallest minds.
Think big anyway…

People favor underdogs
but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building
may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help
But may attack you
If you do help them.
Help them anyway.

Give the world the best
you have and you’ll get
kicked in the teeth.
give the world the best
you have anyway.

Reading the concluding passage in the book galley flashed me back to the years 1997 through 2000 when my husband of struggled to get a project built. Each time I lamented whether we should be involved with the project, Vicki would say, “I don’t know if you should be involved but I do know Richard was meant to build this project. As I sat there in June 2007 I could remember every time Vicki quoted the line, “What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.”

Her guidance during that time did not give me any comfort. I did not grasp that a situation could be terrible but I was still suppose to be doing it.
Guess I needed to remember to: Live the 'Don't Die' Spirit©

Don’t Die With Vacation Time on the Books

My book, Don’t Die with Vacation Time on the Books is short for a host of strategic reasons. Yet, the longer the book is out the more I think of things that were going on behind the scenes of the main story that is in the book. This passage is just one example.

Perspective Changing Events and Awareness June 2007

I found that perspective changing events come in all shapes and sizes. Around the time my friend Marel was making me promise not to die with vacation time on the books, I was doing what every 50 year old is suppose to do – get their first colonoscopy. Of course like every 50 year old, I had already put it off a year!

I heard all the horror stories of the pre-procedure prep day. I was feeling somewhat fortunate because I had someone tell me how to get around having to drink the dreaded colon prep cleanse juice. Seems if you have a doctor that knows you are trustworthy enough to drink gallons of water, they will prescribe pills to take with all that water. The result is the same, minus the nasty tasting drink. When it comes to drinking gallons of water a day, I am very, very trustworthy.

My calendar usually gets booked out a month in advance for business commitments. I found in the weeks leading up to my wellness check, I was gleefully informing people I was unavailable for a 36 hour period. Thirty-six hours! Less than a day and a half, yet I felt the only thing that would allow me that much time away from my commitments was a flipping colonoscopy. I even planned what book I was going to read the way people do when they plan a vacation! People who enjoy reading can tell you what books they are saving for their next vacation. In my case, a friend had a galley of her book, Rules for Renegades.  I was excited to have the time to read it cover to cover.  The author had agreed to be part of my Fall women's conference.

It was only in the weeks that followed the procedure that I began to realize how warped my perspective about life, pleasure and vacations had become. I came face-to-face with the awareness that I my idea of when I deserved to take a vacation looked a lot like needing a doctor’s excuse. I realized that I had taken my Mom’s famous saying that you can stay home from school is you are dying a bit too literally.

Seems I needed to learn to: Remember: Live the 'Don't Die' Spirit©

The Wisdom of Self Help Quotes

At last night’s Las Vegas Library event using Don’t Die With Vacation Time, I facilitated one simple, yet powerful, exercise.

The book is printed in a way that quotes relating to a particular lesson are paired with the story. In the back of the book all of the quotes used are repeated. The intent is to have the reader think of their own life, and tell a story of overcoming adversity using the quotes as guiding lessons.

I took all the quotes, put them in a bag, and had the seminar participants choose just one. They then had to think of a life challenge in any area they were attempting to heal or recover from. They then discussed the challenge from the perspective of the quote’s wisdom.

Some of the randomly quotes chosen:

A promise made is a debt unpaid.” Robert Service
Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous.” Confucius

Participants who chose these quotes were initially confused and rejected that these quotes had any wisdom that applied to their particular challenge. Be the end of the evening, as they told their story – or challenge – they began to see what they could learn for themselves.

Here is what I know: What those participants learned from those quotes would not be the same thing you would learn if you applied those quotes to your situation.

That is the beauty of ‘words of wisdom’ – the words are spoken or written, and you create the wisdom.

Happy Spring,

Fear

Some may think starting the day with a reading about 'fear' would make the day a bit dark.  However, I it to be a challenge.  My morning reading started with a quote:

"Always do what you are afraid to do."  Ralph Waldo Emerson

So I thought about my business -- which in my case is also my life interest -- helping people remember how strong they are so they achieve what they never thought possible -- and I wondered what I am afraid to do to get that message out?  That gave me a few ideas of actions I had been sidestepping in the distribution of my book.  I made a commitment to do the top two things on my list that I have been avoiding.
What action are you afraid to take in your business -- or you life?  Always start your day doing that thing and see what happens.

Sending my book to President Obama was one such thing for me.  I got this nice thank you note!  Still see him carrying it and quoting from it!  That may be a dream but my dream can not possibly become a reality if I did not at least first send the book.

Self-Help Hogwash

I do not believe the cliche "all things happen for a reason" as many use it...when something bad happens there is some 'reason' why it happened and your job is to find out what that reason is and learn from it.

Hogwash.

There is only one reason anything happens and that is because the purpose of life is the transformation of the spirit from one level of connection to our spirit to hopefully more complex levels of connection to our spirit and our spiritual source. That is the reason we live and take each breathe. What shows up in our lives are just opportunities to continue to transform -- the kickin and screaming down the road of transformation is just the noise we make!

So, how is your Monday starting out?  Peace,

Give and Get No April Fool's

Okay, so I get Mercury is retrograde.  The post I just wrote was published with no content.  So being the persistent soul that I am, I will do it again.

I have republished many of Dr. Biswas-Diener's blogs and suggested you purchase his great books on positive psychology.  Today he has made an offer I want to pass along.  He wrote another great blog summarizing the research of giving on the giver.  I will post those comments over the next few days.  In the meantime, please buy his workbook Positively Happy.  It is a self-contained 6 week course in a book on how to make yourself happier.  Buy purchasing the book in the next 7 days, all the proceeds go to Mercy Corp to aid the efforts in Japan.  Below is Dr. Biswas-Diener's offer.  Thank you.

A Happy Way to Help Japan

There are a number of ways you can help the people of Japan. Although they are a wealthy nation donations to groups like the Red Cross and Mercy Corps reflect your compassion and help rescue and reconstruction efforts in that country. As with the earthquake that recently devastated Haiti I want to throw my weight into the humanitarian effort. From April 1 through the 7th I will donate all the proceeds from sales of the Positively Happy workbook (http://tinyurl.com/3dtb97k) to the Mercy Corps

efforts in Japan. I am not donating 10%, or 20%, but 100% of the proceeds. Please allow for up to 24 hours for the electronic workbook to be delivered to you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you so much. As always, feel free to contact us with ideas, suggestions, or questions at http://www.intentionalhappiness.com/  Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener

You Unstuck

Are you finished with the storyline you are telling yourself and others about how the recent economic trauma has adjusted your life and dreams? Are you ready to get unstuck? Can you imagine a life with You Unstuck?

This month’s AM AZ book segment, which will air live on Tuesday, October 12 at 10 a.m. PST, will feature You Unstuck by Libby Gill. I think it’s the right book for right now. As a country we are a year into the economic adjustment. Twelve months is a figurative and literal cycle in psychological adjustment. Figuratively because it signifies transitioning through the four seasons of growth: Winter going dormant, Spring planting and budding, Summer growth and Fall harvest.

Literally because a year is 12 months!

Gill has boiled down the steps of getting You Unstuck into a three-word process: Clarify, Simplify, and Execute. The words really do speak for themselves. From the different areas of your life, to your thinking patterns, to your willingness to accept risk, she offers questions, assessments and exercises to get You Unstuck. She uses the latest findings in the neurosciences to support the processes she provides.

For anyone with money issues, I strongly recommend her Chapter 9 Mind Over Money. The chapter takes you through a self-examination of your spending style, your mindset and offers a step-by-step tracking system. It is a perfect example of her Clarify, Simplify, and Execute model. It challenges you to track your spending, really grasp where your cold hard cash is going, and execute a new way of thinking and behaving by making different choices that work better for you and your current financial situation.

As I stated above, I think the timing of this book is perfect. Too early in the cycle of trauma and you would not be able to comprehend where you are or how you got there. You needed time to see how you might have contributed to your situation before you can design a plan to adjust your behavior and mindset.

As we transition into the beginning of another year, hopefully you are ready to get out of your story and into new possibilities. There is no time better than the present to get You Unstuck.

With appreciation, Andrea

Self-Declared Spring Break

Being an entrepreneur during a recession has many negative implications. And being true to my title of Dr. Success, there is always a benefit to be found in every less than desirable life situation. A moment ago I posted the following away message on my business email:

"I have decided to use the week of April 6 - 12 as a self-declared Spring Break. I will honor all confirmed appointments and look forward to doing so. However, if you are not on my calendar and you are not contacting me about a minimum 5-digit check you would like to hand me at this moment just because I have done such wonderful work in the past...I'll get back to you next week. As always, love, learn and prosper. Andrea"

You see, I could look at my calendar and wonder where has all the business gone...or I could look at my calendar and declare a spring break. I have made my choice. I encourage you to do the same.

Remember to remember...You are as happy at any moment as you allow yourself to think you are.

With much appreciation, Andrea

Twitter Yourself Into The Now

A few weeks ago a wrote an blog twittering about twitter and how we serious, success minded adults need not preoccupy ourselves with adolesence type behavior. This morning I am having some crow for breakfast. Care to join me!

They don’t call me Dr. Success for nothing! I do persevere even when I can’t figure out why! Let me explain. I will admit that I have been making myself familiar with Facebook and Twitter not to create a social network as much to create a web-based business network.

Those of you who play with me know I have a personal motto when it comes to life: Whatever I am doing has to make me happy or make me money. Facebook and Twitter were bringing some happiness in the way of connection to many I love. The money part, however, eluded me and I am personally annoyed by the unending invitations that are really commercials for someone’s work or product.

Then I noticed that I was several times a day wanting to check in and just write a sentence on what I was doing. As we drove out to the Red Rocks yesterday it came to me: Twitter and Facebook were actually helping me to become aware and present to what I was doing and feeling in the moment – that very moment.

Becoming aware of what you are thinking and feeling in present time – and then taking action to embrace, improve or adjust – is a key to life happiness. I must say I never expected that gift from Twitter or Facebook.

I suggest you do the same. These services are free. You will be in community. And you can develop a habit of being aware of your feelings in present time. When you consider how you use your thoughts and time now, using it to become aware and connected might be the change you need to reach your next level of life success.

Sign up. Use them. And follow and make me a freind. See you on Twitter and Facebook.

The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, by Jack Canfield and Janet Switzer

You know you’re willing to do what it takes to be successful. What you don’t know is what books will help you on your journey. 2,000+ self-help titles are printed each year, and everyone from therapists to Oprah recommends a different favorite. You’re too busy to read them all: You have a life, a business, and success to experience. You have to make choices: what business to pursue or which book to read. (With 2,000 books, you’d have to read almost 5.5 books every day, to even come close!)

As Dr. Success, I offer a powerful, valuable shortcut on your journey. I read self-help books as a vocation, a hobby and a business. As a business, I make appearances on television as a self-help expert who reads these books and shares how to turn the authors’ thoughts on a subject into specific actions that viewers can take to get measurable results. (For a sneak peek at my video synopsis of many of the books I will cover in my blog, visit my website: http://www.ServingSuccess.com.) This article will be the first in a series to translate my television segment into monthly articles. In short, I will show you how to use the books instead of just read the books.

Overview

The first book in my monthly series on self-help books is a must-have reference manual on the top 64 success principles by a long-time teacher in the personal transformation field, Jack Canfield. The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, by Jack Canfield with Janet Switzer isn’t necessarily a quick read, but it does put everything you need under one umbrella.

It’s a large book, but don’t let the size turn you off. The book is written in a way that allows you to pick a subject area, and then choose a lesson to turn into action. It is conveniently divided into six main themes, including: The Fundamentals of Success, Ways to Build a Success Team, and reminders that Success Starts Now. Definitely invest the time to read the seven-page introduction. I may disagree with the authors’ suggestion that you read the book from cover to cover, but I enthusiastically support their warning not to become discouraged with how long it may take to see results. The special integrity of this book is that it does not sugarcoat what it takes to achieve success: it takes time – and a lot of it. Yet if you invest the time, this book delivers on its promise: If you apply the principles laid out on its pages, you will achieve your goals.

What to Do

Here’s one technique to effectively use this book. Think of the six sections as potential growth areas. Whenever you have time, randomly choose a section and a reading from that section. “Randomly” means to let your fingers do the walking! Look through the table of contents and stop on a given page. Go there and, with your eyes closed, point to a spot. Open your eyes to see which growth area you’ll be working on. (Many people use this technique when looking for guidance from spiritual books such as the Bible. This can also be used with most self-help books.) Commit to working on only that chosen area for the next seven days. Read the chapter and do the suggested action for that week – then assess your results. Is it working, does it feel right, have you moved closer to where you want to be? This process of personal development may be similar to the way you learned to run a business or solve a challenge: observe, act, analyze, and adjust for greater results.

Another approach is to read the first chapter in every section and work with each one it until you have integrated the actions into your personal success repertoire. Using that technique you will be summoned to take 100% responsibility, drop out of the “Ain’t It Awful” Club and surround yourself with successful people, stay focused on your core genius, be mentally and physically present, develop a positive money consciousness, and most important, start now and just do it!

My Specific Experience with this Book and Results

For me, being reminded to take 100% responsibility also helped me remember that everything in life is the result of choices I make. I would like to share with you what was going on in my business life at the time I was reviewing this book. As I recount my story, try to think of a time you had a similar situation in your personal or work life. Recognizing how you contribute to any situation is the first action step you can take to positively influence a different outcome.

In addition to being an expert in self-help, with my husband, I own and operate two hotels and employ many people. At the time I was reading The Success Principles I felt I was being saddled with less-than-high-performing employees. They seemed to complain a lot, always had an excuse for why some goal was not met, and were quick to blame the one person who was not in the room for all of our challenges. When I was reminded through the first chapter that I needed to take 100% responsibility for my life, I was quickly able to see that I was replicating and creating, in my own life, the behaviors I was experiencing in my company.

That priceless awareness allowed me to see very clearly how the next section’s opening chapter on dropping out of the “Ain’t It Awful” Club and surrounding myself with successful people, might just be my ticket out of my current predicament and on to the next level of success. I monitored my own language about how and why the situation was the way it was, and like magic, the people around me began to do the same.

That different result was reinforced as soon as I began to build a team instead of trying to do everything myself. Staying focused on my core genius and allowing others to contribute to the overall success of the situation was a relief for me and for those who worked for me. Building the team required me to stay present in every conversation with every employee so that each knew would know that I was on his or her team too! It meant not responding to e-mails while someone was trying to speak with me, and it meant not answering a phone call – and turning off my phone if I was in a scheduled meeting with a team member.

As a business owner, I came to realize that my greatest business cost – salaries – would produce better returns if I actually invested time in my employees. I developed a money consciousness that said salaries were an investment, not a liability.

When I read the sixth section of the book, it was obvious that starting now was not a recommendation but an imperative. Success may start as a thought, but it must end in a whole lot of action for it to be sustainable. The Success Principles gives you 64 opportunities to take that action. All you need is the willingness to help yourself.

Action Step for RIGHT NOW

* Get the Book (available here – or check your local library).

* Read the seven-page introduction.

* Choose an action plan (either “random readings” or a chapter-by-chapter overview. Or, go for it, and read it all – every page is a business and personal treasure and a launching pad to your future.)

* Do it now. Success Starts Now!
