Being Ready

Dr. Success Challenge:  Would you be ready to step into an opportunity to advance your life dream at any moment?  Regardless of your answer, how do you know if you are ready?

It has been almost two months since I met Vaopele Tiatia, a graphic designer living in Utah, but from Hawaii.  Vao was seated next to me on a flight to Hawaii.
This was the second trip Vao and his wife would be making in less than as many months.  Vao’s business had not been as robust as he needed and on his first trip he was returning home to help a family member and recharge his spirit.  On that first flight, he saw an advertisement for a shirt design contest.  Although Vao’s graphic work was generally web based, his real dream was to design clothing.  By the end of the flight he had a design in mind and committed to himself to enter the contest.

Well, enter he did, and win he did!  Part of the prize was a trip for two to Hawaii!  It was on that winning return trip that I met Vao.  I was struck by his natural sense of joy, his story of persistence, and how he spontaneously stepped into opportunity when it was presented.
Here is the follow up story.  On that return trip to pick up his prize money and award Vao and his wife decided that they would relocate. They chose to move to Las Vegas!  This move is a major change, a major risk and the potential for a major shift in Vao’s life and life work.  Part of the risk is Vao will be creating a clothing company using his winning design.  This is a plan that was not obvious to him just 5 months ago.

I have told parts of Vao’s story since I meet him, yet it was in re-reading the chapter  ChangeYour Mind in Richard Rohr’s book The Naked Now that prompted me to revisit Vao.  Rohr writes, “Once you accept ongoing change as a central program for yourself, you tend to continue growing throughout all of your life…The ego and the false self hate change more than anything else in the world, and the mind is their primary control tower…Once you know that the one thing the ego-hates more than anything else is change, it makes perfect sense why most people hunker down into mere survival.” (pages 89-90)
Vao is clearly not most people.  Good luck my friend.

The Law of Attraction is Rubbish

The Law of Attraction is Rubbish

For nearly 5 years a concept that was originally used by a clairvoyant seer who lived in the mid-1800’s to describe his understanding of the soul’s journey after death – Law of Attraction – has been bastardized and morphed into a popular clichĂ© used to describe everything good that occurs in your life and everything negative that happens in your life.

Rubbish.

I will give credit where I believe credit is due. I will be forever grateful that the DVD that popularized the term was successful in exposing the greatest single number of people to the concept that their moment-by-moment thoughts – acknowledged and unacknowledged – have an effect on the actions of their lives. I have worked with the concept that thoughts impact life satisfaction for decades. I have not succeeded in getting that message to as many people over all those years in the way that DVD did in less than one year. And now is the time for the real work to begin.

The Law of Attraction as explained in popular media goes like this: You have thoughts, those thoughts become things – good or bad. Net, net your thinking attracts to you good things if you think good things and bad things if you think bad things.

For the record that is more responsibility for my life that I can mange to handle!

I have come to favor the interpretation of Richard Rohr , who I paraphrase:

• You create your response to all things that occur.
• Your response is your reality.
• Therefore you create your reality…or attract how and what is in your life by how you respond to all things in your life.

Your thoughts. Your response. Your reality. Your Law of Attraction.

With appreciation, Andrea

The Great Chain of Being

I have been intrigued with the concept of connectedness for most of 2009. I have always used models of development that have 1-2-3 steps, processes that appear to have a beginning and a logical end. I suggest books that offer such models all the time.

I do believe these models are useful to help organize the process of complex human change.

And I don’t believe it really works that way. What I do believe is that there is a mystery to human interconnectivity that we are never meant to understand, but instead live. One of the best ways I have read it described recently was offered by author Richard Rohr in a daily meditation he adapted from his own work, Hope Against Darkness (p. 135):

“I would like to reclaim an ancient, evolving and very Franciscan metaphor to rightly name the nature of the universe, and to direct our future thinking: the image of the “the Great Chain of Being.” It was a metaphor not of hierarchy but of connection thus the word “chain.” The essential and unbreakable links in the great chain include:

the Divine Creator,

the angels, saints, and ancestors,

the humans,

the animals,

the world of plants, trees, and vegetation,

the waters upon the earth,

the earth itself with its minerals and metals.”

For me, however, the universe outlined in Rohr’s “universe” is missing something. It appears to include all things relating to this earth, but not the infinite galaxies. I don't offer this as critisim. I am truely not that bold. It is more an open observation and question I have. Let me know your thinking.

For those of you lucky enough to live in Las Vegas, Richard Rohr will be holding a day-long event on Saturday, December 5. Call Stillpoint Center for Spiritual Development for more information 702 243 4040.
