The book is printed in a way that quotes relating to a particular lesson are paired with the story. In the back of the book all of the quotes used are repeated. The intent is to have the reader think of their own life, and tell a story of overcoming adversity using the quotes as guiding lessons.
I took all the quotes, put them in a bag, and had the seminar participants choose just one. They then had to think of a life challenge in any area they were attempting to heal or recover from. They then discussed the challenge from the perspective of the quote’s wisdom.
Some of the randomly quotes chosen:
“A promise made is a debt unpaid.” Robert Service
“Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous.” Confucius
Participants who chose these quotes were initially confused and rejected that these quotes had any wisdom that applied to their particular challenge. Be the end of the evening, as they told their story – or challenge – they began to see what they could learn for themselves.
Here is what I know: What those participants learned from those quotes would not be the same thing you would learn if you applied those quotes to your situation.
That is the beauty of ‘words of wisdom’ – the words are spoken or written, and you create the wisdom.
