Success, The Poem

Some people refer to themselves as a life coach. I do not. I don't like the title. Have never used it to refer to my work, nor is it a reference I have ever made about the work I do. I view myself as a life teacher. Before you get your bloomers all in a "lack of humility" knot, let me explain.

My understanding of teaching is that when you teach, you learn twice. That means I understand I will never be done learning. A lot of my learning comes from traditionally accredited sources. And some of my best learnings come from clients as they learn and grow in their own lives.

What follows is a poem I wrote in 2001. It was the result of an exercise I did at a facilitation training. The exercise was to listen to poet David Whyte recite his poem, Faith, and then write the following words at the top of a page, "I want to write a poem about..." (that is the opening line of the poem, Faith). Until you do it you will not know what will follow that 'about'. This is what came after mine.

I am going to write a poem about success.

Success that brings smiles, success that brings joy.

Success that brings rewards that seem so out of reach before success comes.

When will success be the now instead of the future?

When will success be the doing and not the done?

When will success be.

When I am willing, success will come.

Because when I am willing I will see that success is now.

It is where I have traveled and how I have traveled, not were I have yet to travel.

Success is.

I must let it be.
