An Essay on Shifting Sands: A Guidebook for Crossing the Deserts of Change, by Steve Donahue

As a society, we are trained from our earliest years to approach our lives like mountain climbers. From the time we enter school we are supposedly being taught what to pack for life’s journey. By our teens, we have often laid out a detailed map and a kit of tools to our life and we are keenly aware of where our life journey is meant to go and where the summit is. Soon after starting that journey, however, we discover that life has its own paths, surprises and unexpected summits and challenges waiting for us.

The author of Shifting Sands, Steve Donahue, builds on an experience from his youth, where he and a friend seized the moment and unexpectedly drove across the Sahara Desert. Steve uses this as a life metaphor for the long journey of crossing an ever-changing desert when we “expect” to be climbing a well-planned mountain. In this book, the author shares that one evening the group had carefully planned their next step in the journey – it was completely laid out, right down to where the hills and sands and markings were. When they awoke the next morning, there had been a sandstorm and everything was different.

This becomes one of the author’s core revelations: Use a compass instead of a map. Rather than following someone else’s instructions and roadmap to the summit, Donahue encourages his readers to use our own inner compass and intuitive guideposts to plot our path day by day. Life is ever changing, and no amount of maps and markers can really plot our course – and if we think about it, would we even really want that?

One of Donahue’s most poignant chapters is, “When You’re Stuck, Deflate.” When we get stuck in life, we often tend to dig in our heels (or wheels) and just try harder – the old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed,” ringing in our ears. But in life, like in the desert, sometimes that only bogs us deeper down into the sand. Being hell-bent to follow the map and do something the way we plan, can literally stop us in our tracks. According to Shifting Sands, sometimes we must simply stop, let go, and shift with the changing scene around us. The question thus becomes: How do I let go of my ideas and my ego and move forward?

As an executive mentor, my role is to uncover why we allow ourselves to get stuck and what we do to shift and rethink our direction and our summits. We know through positive psychology that as human beings we are sometimes stopped by our own experiences and comfort level over and over. Our ego will use this as a benchmark to allow us to feel “accomplished.” We are thus compelled to repeat only what we know. By using an inner compass, you can use your own “True North” to overtake that mental goalpost and begin to create a different journey and conquer summits higher than we might have ever dreamed to set.

As human beings, we like to assume we “know” how things will turn out and what steps we need to take to get there. We are gratefully reminded in Shifting Sands: A Guidebook for Crossing the Deserts of Change, that each life is an uncharted adventure to be joyously relished.

To your success! Dr. Success, Andrea Goeglein, Ph.D.http://www.servingsuccess.com/

Shifting Sands Steve Donahue

Everything starts somewhere and for me, Shifting Sands is the book that started my BK relationship in earnest. Steve Donahue was a keynote speaker for a Stillpoint fundraiser in 2009 and his book continues to impact my consulting and my life.  Thank you again to AM Arizona for allowing me the segment to feature inspirational books.

Gary Russo Don't Die Author

In the last few days my cousin Gary Russo's voice became known to millions.  This evening he agreed to be my next Don't Die author.  I told him to sleep on a title that feels right.  I gave him the first few lines of the introduction I had written.  He paused and said, "Wow, that's deep".  Now the work begins of writing the book which we hope to have out by October 1.  What follows is an email he wrote to me on June 9, 2011 -- several weeks after we had spent the afternoon together at a family gathering.

Dear Andrea,

It was so goood to see you the other day. Especially to see Cara and the family having a good time. It really made my heart swell to see you give your time to help my little one and the contest. Time goes too quick. I am very impressed with your site and the work you do. Dr Success I love it. I've been on a path of discovery for the past few years.  It must have been the water in Richmond Hill that put us on the path. LOL Just down loaded Shifting Sands on my nook. Looking forward to following your success. Stay well and help the world get better. Keep in touch. Love to you and the family. Thanks for Jeanie\'s number, I\'m working 500 ft from her front door.

Cousin, I don't think you will be following my success.  I think we will be enjoying some success together.
Thank you, Andrea Goeglein, PhD

A forever Hero

Why do books matter?  Because they continue to impact the reader long after the book is read!

August 2009 Be The Hero was released.  January 30, 2010 master coach and author Noah Blumenthal presented his book at a fundraising event for Stillpoint Center for Spiritual Development.  October 2010 -- ten months later -- someone who attended the presentation and read the book commented that book and presentation marked a positive turning point in their personal development.

The same week I sat in a board meeting for Stillpoint.  Board members asked if the author we had the year before Noah -- Steve Donahue of Shifting Sands -- had another book out yet.  They wanted him to come back!

Time passes but good books live on in the hearts of their readers.  Read on.

Connections

Dr. Success Challenge: Today when you encounter someone you know, think through thoroughly how you first became acquainted with them, what connections were made because they came into your life, and how many things in your life are now connected because of that one meeting.

I have always been intrigued with the concept of how we are connected – especially in ways that you find out about after you know someone for a while. Many years ago when I developed my tree logo as a symbol of how ServingSuccess is about the tree of life and how to grow people, I also used an exercise in business meetings that got people thinking about how they were connected to others in their business circle. I had found that over time we lost track of how and why people came into our business lives (or any part of lives) and in losing track we also lost a sense of the magic of relationships, connections, and appreciation.

Reading When God Winks caused me to resurrect that activity in my own life and work. Then I was involved in the book launch of Be The Hero by Noah Blumenthal and the mystery of how we are all connected became all to obvious yet again.

This is what my worksheet of some seemingly unconnected life events ended up being very, very connected over a 10 year period.

2000 Las Vegas. I met Mary Jane W. At the time she was a business associate of a client.

2001 Mary Jane’s husband is instrumental in the life-saving medical care my Dad received.

2003 Mary Jane attends one of my Positive Psychology Executive Women’s Groups.

2005 Mary Jane co-facilitates the next Executive Women’s Group with me. One of the members of that group, who Mary Jane attracted into the group, gives me a book, Shifting Sands, by Steve Donahue.

2008 I feature Shifting Sands on the second segment of Books that Matter on AM Arizona. The publisher of Shifting Sands calls to thank me. The publisher puts me in touch with their author’s coop and I telephonically meet Noah Blumenthal. Later that year Noah asks me to review a draft copy of his upcoming book, Be The Hero.

2009 August: I write a testimonial for Be The Hero. The book is published.

December: I give a copy of Be the Hero to Mary Jane as a Christmas gift.

Mary Jane calls to tell me that she was shocked to see my testimonial for the book right below the daughter of a nursing school friend from Canada, where Mary Jane lived for some period.

2010 Mary Jane meets Noah at an author's event in Las Vegas I organized. I have a telephonic meeting with Gwyn, the person who wrote that testimonial and who knew Noah and Mary Jane even though Noah and Mary Jane had never meet, were born in different countries, decades apart.

I find this really a fun exercise to play with. It helps me sit with the mystery of where does it all start and where is it all going.

Most of all I enjoy being reminded how, in some mysterious way, we are really all connected.

Happy Connecting,

You Unstuck

Are you finished with the storyline you are telling yourself and others about how the recent economic trauma has adjusted your life and dreams? Are you ready to get unstuck? Can you imagine a life with You Unstuck?

This month’s AM AZ book segment, which will air live on Tuesday, October 12 at 10 a.m. PST, will feature You Unstuck by Libby Gill. I think it’s the right book for right now. As a country we are a year into the economic adjustment. Twelve months is a figurative and literal cycle in psychological adjustment. Figuratively because it signifies transitioning through the four seasons of growth: Winter going dormant, Spring planting and budding, Summer growth and Fall harvest.

Literally because a year is 12 months!

Gill has boiled down the steps of getting You Unstuck into a three-word process: Clarify, Simplify, and Execute. The words really do speak for themselves. From the different areas of your life, to your thinking patterns, to your willingness to accept risk, she offers questions, assessments and exercises to get You Unstuck. She uses the latest findings in the neurosciences to support the processes she provides.

For anyone with money issues, I strongly recommend her Chapter 9 Mind Over Money. The chapter takes you through a self-examination of your spending style, your mindset and offers a step-by-step tracking system. It is a perfect example of her Clarify, Simplify, and Execute model. It challenges you to track your spending, really grasp where your cold hard cash is going, and execute a new way of thinking and behaving by making different choices that work better for you and your current financial situation.

As I stated above, I think the timing of this book is perfect. Too early in the cycle of trauma and you would not be able to comprehend where you are or how you got there. You needed time to see how you might have contributed to your situation before you can design a plan to adjust your behavior and mindset.

As we transition into the beginning of another year, hopefully you are ready to get out of your story and into new possibilities. There is no time better than the present to get You Unstuck.

With appreciation, Andrea
